S. A. Cosby

I fear I say this too often, which may risk my credibility, but this is one of the best works of crime fiction I have come across. Scratch that. This is one of the best books I have come across.

I hate how long it took me to find an S. A. Cosby novel. I was three chapters in before I had already added his other works to my cart online. It’s not worth hoping you’ll stumble upon them in a thrift store (although I did, lucky me). Seriously, don’t wait around for a secondhand miracle. Just go get them now!

If you are in the market for a great crime fiction read, this is it. Cosby beautifully blends together themes like the Old South, racial tension, political tension, law enforcement, the influence of religion, and so much more into a story that I found myself returning to at every first chance. I am a willing and energetic reader, but I cannot emphasize enough how engaging this book is.

The story is dark and violent, and Cosby explores the darker parts of humanity with skill and precision without ever overdoing it or losing authenticity.

You will learn something about yourself while reading this book. Is that not the mark of a great author?

His work lingers long with you after you close a page. This is not just because of the plot, but because of the way he makes you wrestle with the moral weight of his characters’ choices. This is the kind of book I will press into a friend’s hands and insist they read so we can talk about it afterward.

It is rare to find a novel that entertains, challenges, and stays with you all at once, this is one of them.

At this point, it’s less about reviewing and more about officially announcing that I’m hooked. My bookshelves are already bursting at the seams, but somehow Cosby’s novels are carving out their own dedicated corner.

This one’s not easy-going. You’ll need a couple cups of coffee to keep up with the heavy stuff, but it’s the kind of read you’ll want to stick with anyway.
